I used to be a summer girl. God, I loved those sun-soaked days that stretched long into night. Sundresses. Summer vacation. Outdoor dining on patios strung with little lights. Picnics along the river. The days felt like possibility, potential, promise. Giddy, sparkling light diffused through a gossamer haze. I can romanticize just about anything, even the dog days of summer.

But like the seasons, I’ve changed. It happened slowly, and sometimes quietly, in barely perceptible ways. Other times, in undeniable fits and starts. The giddy, sparkling shine has evolved into something softer, deeper, and wiser—candlelight in cool, misty fog. I still adore summer, but in autumn I’ve found a spirit remarkably kindred to my current phase of life.

Bubbly-drinked afternoon picnics become hot chocolate mornings in Adirondack chairs. Sundresses give way to cardigans with elbow patches. Twinkle-lit patios darken into candlelight and firelight. Books get longer and heavier. I retreat.

As I do with most things in life, I create rituals that steep me in the spirit of each season. I do not know how many I’ll get, and I refuse to let a single one pass by without honoring and enjoying it deeply. How many autumns will be mine? Which will be my last? I cannot know, and that means I willingly give myself over to the absolute wonder that is this season.

• Transitioning my closet. Cleaning and putting away my summer clothes, and re-acquainting myself with my cold-weather wardrobe. It feels like greeting old friends after months away.

• Making inspiration boards for autumn, Halloween, spells and rituals, fall and winter outfits, home decor, and comfort food.

• Going apple picking with loved ones, and eating cider donuts dusted with sugar and cinnamon.

• Baking fall treats: molasses cookies, apple crumb, coffee cake, pumpkin pie.

• I love the sound of football in the background, it reminds me of my childhood. I’ll happily spend hours in the kitchen baking bread and making soup or risotto with the sound of whistles and referees as my soundtrack.

• Curling up under a blanket to watch a fall movie. I have a long list of movies by season, and some of my favorites for autumn are Practical Magic, Scent of a Woman, Rushmore, Beetlejuice, Moonstruck, and Witches of Eastwick.

• Long walks with the dogs, listening to the leaves rustle, feeling the cool air on my skin, smelling the woodsmoke from brick chimneys, and gazing at the trees in shades of orange, yellow, and red. I let the season overtake my senses.

• An afternoon bubblebath on a moody day with a deep chill in the air. Paired with a fall-scented candle and a fluffy robe to shrug into.

One such ritual is my morning walk. I wake with the first light of the sun, between five and six o’clock, no alarm needed. In the kitchen, I start the kettle. As it heats, I drink two glasses of water, speaking an intention, wish, or affirmation before bringing each glass to my lips. I squeeze a wedge of lemon into a mug of warm water, press the “on” button to brew the coffee, and set out for my morning walk.

The light is always soft, the sun not yet over the horizon, but the air greets me unpredictably. Some mornings it’s cool and misty. Others it’s heavy with humidity, thick and pressing against me. I walk slowly, gazing across the farm, smelling the grass, the flowers, the rain I didn’t hear in the night. In one hand I carry my mug of lemon water; the other reaches into my robe for sunflower seeds. I sprinkle them along my path, hoping the birds are watching. One day they’ll trust me enough to eat out of my hand.

I pass under my favorite tree, an old mulberry, and feel protected beneath its arching canopy. Six wild turkeys promptly run for the woods at first sight of me. Sometimes I see babies, working hard to keep up with their mama.

They raise their heads, ears pointed and alert, tails swishing. After a few precious moments, they go the way of the turkeys, seeking cover in the dense growth of the woods.

Creativity is a huge part of my life, and not something I talk about nearly enough considering the space it takes up and the weight it carries.

What I’ve come to understand is this: creativity is not a gift. It’s not something you’re born with or without. It’s a practice.

And like any practice, it becomes easier—more natural, more expansive—the more you return to it.

For some reason, creativity is one of the only areas where we insist on believing otherwise. We tend to treat it like an inherent trait, a fixed identity: creative or not creative. Most of us quietly decide we fall into the latter category—and then we never challenge it.

But we don’t think this way about anything else.

We don’t believe the world’s greatest athletes were simply born knowing how to swing a golf club or return a serve. We understand the years behind it—the repetition, the discipline, the devotion. We don’t assume musicians arrived in this world as virtuosos, or that experts in any field were handed mastery at birth. We recognize the practice.

So why is creativity different? Why do we write ourselves off as uncreative when we’ve spent little to no time actually practicing it?

My own creative practice didn’t begin as a pursuit of art. It began as a response to absence. When I stopped drinking, I expected to feel better—and I did. It was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. But what I didn’t expect was the quiet that followed. The empty space. The realization that without it, I wasn’t nearly as fulfilled—or as interesting—as I had believed.

There was a gap where something had been, and I didn’t know how to fill it. I had time. I had clarity. I had a restless, searching energy that needed somewhere to go.

So I started trying things.

I sketched objects around my house—a pitcher, a lemon juicer, crumpled tissue. I wrote until my hands cramped—about my feelings, my experiences, perfumes, dreams, fantasies. I bought watercolor paints and made things that were, objectively, not good. I kept going anyway.

I watched tutorials. I practiced. I made more bad things. And then, slowly, they became less bad.

Somewhere along the way, something shifted. I started looking forward to it. Not because I was good, but because of how it felt: time would dissolve. My mind would quiet. I would disappear into the act of making.

After a few months, I moved on to pastels. Then acrylics. Then oils. I started writing this Substack. I kept sketching. I started collaging. Some pieces took twenty minutes. Others took days. I began a commonplace journal—playing with layout, ideas, color, texture. Fountain pens, stickers, fragments of thought.

It wasn’t linear, and it wasn’t perfect. It was a practice.

And over time, it expanded beyond art.

I began to see creativity everywhere—in how I got dressed, in how I crafted a meal, in the act of baking bread or making soap. In the way I rearranged a corner of my home until it felt just right.

Some days, ideas come easily. Other days, I have to go looking for them. Some things I make are not good. Some, I think, are. None of it really matters.

What matters is that I show up.

Because of how it feels to be inside the act of creating. Because it makes my life feel more beautiful. Because it gives shape to my days—something like purpose, something like meaning.

I was standing in line at UPS, my second time there within twenty minutes, after forgetting to include the house keys with the closing documents.

It was a small disruption, a pause I had not planned for.

I stood there mentally rehearsing what I would say when I reached the counter, lightly holding control in my hands, the way I do. At the same time, I watched the quiet choreography of the room: the employees, the customers, the small movements of ordinary life on a rainy Wednesday.

To my left stood a mother with her daughter. Their backs were turned to me. The girl had the most beautiful hair—a deep, reddish brown, thick and softly curled, pulled into a ponytail that looked effortless. From her profile, I could see her skin—porcelain, untouched by the sun, not yet weathered by the world. She looked to be somewhere between sixteen and nineteen. “She is lovely,” I thought.

My attention drifted.

And when I turned back toward her, she was facing me, her arms extended. Her hands gently pulling something apart.

There was no hesitation in her, no question, no social preamble. No smile meant to reassure, no words to explain herself. Just the movement itself—clear, simple, complete.

I looked at what she held in her hands. A bracelet—elastic, strung with tiny gold hearts.

I understood, without thinking, that she wanted to place it on my wrist.

And so I held out my arm.

She slid the bracelet on.

“Thank you so much,” I said, deeply touched.

What strikes me now is not only the moment itself, but what happened after. Or rather, what didn’t happen. My turn came and I stepped forward. I completed my errand and walked outside.

My husband pulled up, and I got into the car. We talked. We drove home.

And it wasn’t until I rolled up my sleeves to wash my hands that I saw it again—the bracelet wrapped lightly around my wrist—and remembered. Though the gesture felt profound and touched me, I hadn’t held it in my mind. I hadn’t translated it into words to tell my husband. As if the moment had been held somewhere else. I have spent much of my life naming things quickly. Identifying, labeling, translating experience into language. Capturing moments so they do not slip away. Sharing them, shaping them, offering them outward.

But something is changing.

I am learning how to remain inside an experience without reaching for it. To let something be meaningful without immediately making meaning of it. To receive without grasping. To let an experience move through me rather than moving myself through the experience.

There was something wordless between us, she and I. Not necessarily mystical, but also not entirely ordinary. A kind of recognition that defies language. She did not ask, I did not question. Nothing was negotiated. She saw, she offered, I received. A moment of quiet resonance, a brief alignment of two people.

I have been practicing surrender. Letting go of control and releasing the need to shape every moment, to understand it, to hold it tightly. And here, in the most ordinary of places, I was shown what that can look like. An offering that arrives without effort. A gesture that asks nothing in return. A moment that does not need to be extended, explained, or preserved.

Only received.

I am wearing the bracelet now as I write this, the small gold hearts encircling my wrist. I will continue to wear it as a reminder that not everything that is meant for me needs to be reached for. There are few things as seductive to me as self-devotion. I don’t mean seductive in the overtly sexual way the word is typically understood. I mean the magnetic pull of something sublime.

Self-devotion is, at its core, an act of resistance. And I have always been drawn—with a primal force—to resistance and subversion. I have a problem with authority. I resist being told what to do. I scoff at hierarchy and regard rules as suggestive at best. I avoid obligation and bristle at the mere suggestion that I walk the path most taken.

For women especially, self-devotion is one of the most radical forms of resistance available to us.

From early childhood, girls are trained to put themselves last. To be a good friend, wife, sister, colleague, mother, or daughter means placing the wants and needs of others ahead of our own. The systems and institutions that quietly support and reward this self-abandonment—religion, marriage, the nuclear family, romantic ideology, motherhood, capitalism, beauty culture, the modern workplace—offer rewards for compliance and punishments for defiance.

The rewards for self-sacrifice are subtle but powerful: approval, belonging, romantic desirability, professional opportunities, social protection, moral superiority. She is a “good woman.” A “good mother.” She is easy, flexible, agreeable.

The reward is social safety. And as social creatures, safety is an intoxicating currency.

When women refuse to comply, the punishment is swift and familiar. She is labeled selfish, cold, difficult, “too much.” She risks the loss of community, opportunity, acceptance. She is shamed, guilted, gaslit. She is framed as damaged, broken, undesirable—the single cat lady caricature.

The punishment is the withdrawal of love, belonging, and meaning.

At the heart of this conditioning lies a quiet but relentless practice: self-betrayal. A woman must police herself over and over again in order to remain compliant.

I learned this intimately when, at forty-five, I realized I did not recognize myself.

I had slowly surrendered myself to the systems that benefited from my compliance. The realization was devastating. Even now it brings tears; two years ago, it nearly collapsed me under shame.

What had happened to me?

In my youth, I was audacious, self-reverent, uncontrollable. I took pride—bordering on arrogance—in being a woman who bucked the system. But little by little, through small concessions and major life events, I surrendered myself to expectation.

I served everyone before I served myself, which usually meant there was nothing left for me. I kept my mouth shut to keep the peace. I pleased. I smiled. I pretended. I deferred. I managed. I contorted myself into every role assigned to me: loyal friend, supportive sister, forgiving daughter, accommodating wife, gentle stepmother, dedicated employee turned inspirational entrepreneur, desirable blonde.

I dressed appropriately. Wore natural makeup. Maintained a body that never suggested I had “let myself go.” I was smart, but not too smart. Feminine, but not excessive. Grateful. Undemanding.

I did everything the world told me a good woman does.

And I hated myself.

Lately I’ve been thinking about magic. Not the kind that takes place under full moons and over bubbling cauldrons—though I think plenty about that kind, too. I’ve been thinking about the magic of youth, and what happens when it fades.

When you’re young—or at least, when I was—everything feels enchanted. Well into my twenties, and even my thirties, life carried an effervescence: a buoyant joy, a near-constant hum of anticipation. A three‑day weekend? I was giddy with possibility. A trip to a new city? I’d practically bounce onto the plane. Buying a new home meant months spent designing every room in my mind. And Christmas—Christmas made me glow for six weeks straight, lit by twinkling tree lights and set to a soundtrack of carols and beloved holiday films. Even the crowds delighted me. I shopped Black Friday weekend, reveling in the season’s electricity as I happily hunted for gifts.

It was in this spirit of holiday magic that I planned a December weekend in Manhattan. Cozy memories of Christmases past guided every reservation and careful choice. Depth requires time, reflection, and a slow pace—things many of us are losing tolerance for. We haven’t lost our need for depth; in fact, I’d argue we need it now more than ever. And because that need still exists, we search for it—but not in ourselves, where it’s most likely to be found. Instead, we seek it in information and in other people, in TikTok videos and Substack essays, in wellness hacks and too-short vacations meant to restore us to wholeness.

We search for depth in the very noise that distracts us from its sources: quiet, reflective time with ourselves; intimate connection in small groups; immersion in hobbies or study; thick novels that build complex characters and ideas. We watch our TikToks on 2x speed, deciding within five seconds whether they’re worth our time. We skip captions. We scan articles and posts, muttering, get to the point already. And that’s part of the problem—when there are endless options, we never want to commit to one, even for ten minutes.

No matter what we’re doing, there’s a constant buzz of other, more, never enough—something else to read, buy, watch, or get angry about. It’s the hum of a machine that never stops, whispering that there’s always something better just one scroll away. It’s shallowness disguised as information, distraction camouflaged as connection, capitalism masked as fulfillment.

I believe the epidemic of loneliness is rooted, in part, in this loss of depth. What happens when we crave real, intimate connection but don’t know how to develop it? When we have emotions we can’t name because we’ve lost the capacity for reflection? When we don’t have the language to describe what we feel or want? When those who do cultivate depth can’t find others capable of meeting them there? What happens when depth becomes the privilege of the wealthy—those who can afford time, space, and quiet? What happens when we no longer know ourselves deeply, leaving us easy to manipulate and control?

Human beings are built for connection and contemplation—and we are rapidly losing both. In their absence, we search for meaning in 280-character tweets, for connection through parasocial “relationships,” for happiness in Amazon deliveries and the latest “wellness” trend.

In recent months (okay, years), I began noticing these tendencies in myself. I couldn’t commit to watching a two-hour movie. I’d start a novel and feel impatient with its pace—why was it taking so long to get to the point? I’d click on a fascinating article and find myself skimming, trying to absorb the gist with the smallest possible investment of time or attention. Even when I sat down to do things I love—painting, writing, journaling—I felt pulled in a dozen directions. Is this what I really want to do? Wouldn’t my time be better spent doing something else?

When I watched TV, I’d have my laptop open, jumping between tabs, doing everything and nothing at once. I became easily influenced by other people online—their interests, habits, aesthetics—allowing their opinions to shape what I bought, read, or even thought about.

Eventually, I realized—with a mix of shame and horror—that I had lost the ability to focus. It made me feel manic, unfulfilled, and hollow. I was always convinced I should be doing something else, that I was missing out by not chasing every link, that stillness was laziness. But none of it made me happier or wiser or more whole. With each scroll, I felt like I was betraying myself—trading nuance and depth for busyness and performance.

So I began to pay attention. I tracked when I felt distracted or influenced. I noted how often I picked up my phone, checked email, or opened Instagram—and what I was feeling each time. Then, I started to make changes with awareness and intention.

I moved my email app from its docked position on my home screen, into a hidden folder. That one small shift broke the habit of checking it dozens of times a day. I also turned off almost all notifications and batched the rest into twice-daily deliveries. I set timers for each block of time and flipped my phone face-down.

I chose two books—one fiction, one nonfiction—that I found compelling, not ones recommended by influencers. I set aside two 30-minute sessions each day to read slowly, highlighter in hand, and another 30 minutes to journal about what I’d read. Thinking deeply about the themes that resonated was far more gratifying than anything I’d read on-screen.

I picked a single topic—giftedness and high sensitivity as forms of neurodivergence—and scheduled three focused research sessions per week. During those hours I didn’t touch my phone, open new tabs, or multitask. I followed threads of curiosity wherever they led, and in that flow, I felt expansive and alive again.

I also keep a running list of every book, product, or idea I’m tempted to explore because of social media. Instead of impulsively buying or Googling, I just jot it down. When I revisit the list later, most of it makes me laugh. What was I thinking?

It’s been eight weeks since I started, and the difference is astonishing. I can focus for hours at a time—painting, writing, researching, reading. My mind feels whole again, not fractured into a thousand jagged pieces.

This is ongoing work, but I’m finally diving into my depths again—and it feels like coming home. Depth isn’t a luxury, it’s where we find meaning and purpose. It’s our birthright, and it’s being rapidly stripped from us to feed the machine and keep it humming. With awareness, we can turn off the machine and slow down enough to meet ourselves and rediscover the quiet satisfaction of focus, curiosity, and connection.

The world doesn’t change when I step away, but I do. I soften. I breathe. I expand. I can feel myself again. I can hear my thoughts in their true voice, not distorted by the noise of a thousand others. In that quiet space I am rediscovering my depth and reclaiming the parts of myself I once feared the world had taken.

One of the ways I flex my creativity throughout the year is by building seasonal altars. They can be as simple as a few treasures tucked onto a bookshelf or as elaborate as an entire tabletop layered with dozens of elements. What I love most is that an altar is never just decoration—it’s atmosphere. A seasonal altar weaves together three of my favorite things: design, nature, and tokens of the season. When arranged with intention, these items become more than objects. Together, they create mood. They pull us into rhythm with the cycles of the earth, the turning of the year.

Sometimes an altar is purely aesthetic—a vignette of beauty that sparks joy when you pass it. Other times it becomes wholly immersive: a place where you pause, light a candle, journal, meditate, set intentions, or cast spells. There are no rules here, no “right way.” You are creating something for your pleasure, your reverence, your connection. Still, there are tips and guidelines that help the process feel fluid rather than overwhelming. Here’s my guide for designing an autumn altar—step by step.

Step 1: Choose the Location

Start by deciding where your altar will live. The size of the space will shape how many elements you gather. A small altar—on a nightstand, a narrow shelf, or the corner of a desk—might only need a few meaningful pieces. A larger altar—on a credenza, dresser, or dining table—can handle more layers and drama.

Place your altar somewhere you’ll actually see it: a cozy corner, the heart of your living room, the spot you linger with morning coffee. It should invite your attention, not compete with it.

Step 2: Gather the Elements

I like to work from lists. First, I create a list of “evergreen” altar pieces—items that aren’t tied to a season but form the foundation of every arrangement. These are your building blocks: candleholders, trays, vessels, cloths, mirrors, pedestals, little bowls, books, and stands.

Next, I make a list of seasonal items—in this case, all things autumn. Think gourds, fallen leaves, acorns, dried flowers, pumpkins, seasonal fruits, branches, autumn herbs, rich fabrics, and earthy tones.

Once I have my lists, I wander my home slowly and gather. I pull from shelves, cabinets, and drawers—pilfering from other rooms, stacking everything in one place so I can see my palette. This part always feels like treasure hunting.

Step 3: Clear and Set the Base

Before arranging, clear the surface completely. You need a blank slate. Then begin with your foundational pieces—the ones that will establish height, depth, and shape. Think stacks of leather-bound books, a tiered stand, a cake pedestal, or a small trellis. These aren’t the stars but the scaffolding, the quiet structure that will hold your display.

Step 4: Layer the Seasonal Magic

Now comes the fun part. Begin placing your autumnal items, layering them in ways that create visual interest:

• Mix textures: smooth beside rough, soft beside hard.

• Play with shapes: something flowing over something square, something organic against something geometric.

• Vary height: a tall candle next to a low bowl, a stack of books beneath a pumpkin.
